Description
In the fall of 1986, Lee Mullican began participation in UCLA’s Advanced Design Research Center’s Program for Technology in the Arts. The program allowed the then 66-year-old artist to expand his vast oeuvre to the digital. He found inspiration in the similarities between his painting style and a computerized matrix. Replacing his brush and signature palette knife striations with a clickable mouse and pen-like stylus, Mullican merged the late Surrealist method of automatism with the computer’s instant and precise replication of marks, stating; “I found that beyond what one thought, the computer as being hard-lined, analytical, and predictable, it was indeed a medium fueled with the automatic, enabled by chance, and accident, discovery of new ways of making imagery.”
The artworks in LeeMullican.PCX were originally created in PC Paintbrush and saved as PCX files. PCX stands for “Picture Exchange”, which is a Paintbrush Bitmap image format developed by ZSoft Corporation. It was developed as one of the initial bitmap image formats for DOS and Windows, supporting 24-bit true color images, 1-bit black and white images, 8-bit grayscale and indexed color images. Widely used as the imaging standard on the DOS platform, this raster image format also served as the native file format for PC Paintbrush. Although PCX image format has been replaced by newer formats like PNG and BMP, it’s still used by fax and scanning applications. The original PCX file for this work is included in your collector package.

When Lee made these works they were saved on 5 ¼ inch floppy discs. The technology at the time did not allow artists like Lee to easily search through files, so Lee documented his digital pieces by taking 35mm photographs of his individual pieces and produced slides from the photos. These archived 35mm slides were used as reference material to format the artworks in this exhibition, and scans of these slides are included in the downloadable content unlocked with the purchase of this NFT.

As you explore the original art file and slide you will see that these works were made on larger white backgrounds. These backgrounds have been cropped so the artwork better fits your screen, but no graphic information has been lost.

06-30 23:14 <-> : Really thinking back and appreciating how much a2p was a lego connector to so many other artists for me. Even more importantly was this chance to hear from people in the chat and recognize that we all mostly shared a sense of uncertainty and wonder about having this chance to swap work on a new platform. Big community vibes! Very special project and I'm so glad we get to hear folks talk in more depth this week! Cyborg hugs....lee

07-06 16:26 <> : Obviously a positive change :>
07-06 20:42 <> : web3 has definitely grown into it's own in the past 2-3 years, offering a lot more security, autonomy and incredible platforms. But along with that has come numerous scams, countless $$$ and NFTs stolen or lost and a complete sense of grift to anyone outside of it. Don't get me started on gas fees, please. Until this is remedied, web3 will not grow.
07-06 21:06 <> : Hi all, long time FF lurker until recently when I purchased a Lee Mullican edition for my collection. Several other FF projects are on my wishlist but those will come.
07-06 21:48 <> : gmgm patiently waiting for ff 2.0

07-10 23:21 <> : hi hi - fun to see all the chat here
07-11 00:35 <> : Net positive. As a photographer who understands the impact of technology on storytelling, web3 art makes complete sense in the ever evolving world of art.
07-12 06:26 <> : Two more days to N=12!
07-12 20:41 <> : GM all
07-12 20:43 <> : personally, net positive. Increased my art exposure 1000x
07-12 20:55 <> : gm gm
07-12 22:28 <> : gm! Def a net positive -- made it so much easier to engage with and collect
07-12 22:28 <> : gm! definitely a net positive because it made it so much easier to engage and gave so many more artists a pathway to create
07-12 22:31 <> : Oops -- sorry for the double post. Looks like it got eaten on the first post
07-13 01:54 <> : This question is best answered by people who have traveresed Web3. One of the many positive aspects of blockchain is the potential for a ramp onto the stage, the expansion of the concept on what a 'stage' is, and a sentinel to preserve all artworks equally. A preservative for the work of the introverts, the recluse, and the misunderstood; who don’t speak the common language and are unable to rise above the noise. One day the frequency of an explorer may harmonize with this art, which can then finally be deciphered.Congrats&♡2FF
07-13 07:29 <> : For me, net positive for sure.
07-13 07:51 <> : GM
07-13 08:46 <> : Gm
07-13 08:47 <> : GM
07-13 08:55 <> : GM
07-13 09:43 <> : GM
07-13 13:48 <> : It has been a joy to browse the artworks in the FF1 retrospective, so much fantastic work and many new favorites. I look forward to launching the N=12 exhibition and kicking off FF 2.0 in a few hours! The future is bright for digital artwork and Feral File is modeling the way forward. Congratulations to the team at FF, and to the artists & curators that are part of their story 🎉
