“I am always drawn to how artists address identity in their work, especially around the concept of self or who society or structures allow to exist and how. LaTurbo Avedon is an artist who doesn’t exist offline, which is sort of the ultimate form of conceptual art in a time of “always being on.” LaTurbo doesn’t exist in any other domain but the ephemeral, and while I’d expect that a lack of physical presence in a world where parties and openings count as part of the discourse is difficult, they make it work — it’s not unlike how gamers don’t have access to every part of the gaming world they’re playing inside, and yet they exist within those very systems successfully. ‘Self-Portrait with Mask’ is a part of the artist’s ongoing series of portraits exploring their mutable online identity.” —Addie Wagenknecht
