Description
“Auriea Harvey calls these works ‘digital sculptures.’ The name is apt as they combine her deep knowledge of historical sculpture with her figurative rendering skills and her new media expertise. ‘Sketch for a Cyclops’ is a 3D model, presented as stills and as a .glb interactive web object. The still image version feels like ultrasound scans from an archeological expedition, while the white on white .glb version resembles a fresh plaster cast in the artist’s studio. Auriea would later version this 2019 sketch as the epic physical sculpture ‘The Grand Cyclops.’” —Rick Silva
“The variability of the digital image and perhaps the impossibility of its containment. A digital sculpture sketch of the (imaginary) Cyclops. As an image (which can be printed out), as a link (via QR-code) to a web page with embedded 3D model (which can be downloaded and 3D printed), as an AR object (if your phone supports it). I am thinking about my sculpture and if there being 10 official copies makes the Cyclops any more real?” —Auriea Harvey XLVIII
Auriea’s digital sculpture “The Mystery [v5-dv1]” was featured in The Bardo: Unpacking the Real in May 2021, the second exhibition on Feral File. She followed up with Gray Matter, an ambitious solo exhibition released on Feral File in November 2022.
